Favorite dive? |
Thu, May 19 2005 17:32:12 |
Hello everybody! I'm new in the community and would like to share a bit of our experiences. What was your best dive and why? It may be something you saw or something that happend that made it so special... I'll start. My best dive was in the Maldives this February. On the last dive of the day, in a tipical channel-drift-dive we got the chance to see more than 25 sharks beetween white tips and grey reefs. After drifting, the divemaster pointed out to the first of 4 nurse sharks we spotted. Two turtles completed this awsome experience that Maldives diving is famous for. |

Ok, here is my favorite dive:
The Indians in the BVIs. It is a set of small volcanic protrusions from the water. Below them, there is some of the most beautiful coral and flowers I have ever seen. i have done it twice and been amazed both times. |

stop me if you've already heard this one:
my fave is coconut point on Apo Island in Dumaguete (Philippines)... dive #10
after a cursory dive brief 14 of us dropped down into what apparently was a raging current... spread everyone everywhere... had trouble submerging, then a little equalizing, then even bothered to fin against current, then decided to F it and go with the flow
saw jacks and huge sea stars and a lot of great things and tried the rest of the time to stay level at 1 depth...
when i surfaced and clambered on to the chase boat i had a small nose bleed but a huge grin on my face... find out about 20 minutes later that we were a group of: 2 course directors, 8 instructors, 3 DMs and an OW diver... ME! they thought i was a pro! hahahahahahahahahaha
glad to be alive and my skill level decent enough to dive with the big boys
Jag
PS my instructor (who was with us) and my DM friend said they would still have allowed me to go down but with a more in-depth dive brief than what we got IF they knew the currents were that strong... it was all our virgin dive in apo island |

That is a really hard question since I consider all of them my favorite dives. I guess if I really had to choose just one it would be the first dive at darwin Arch in the Galapagos Islands. We saw 6 whale sharks on 1 dive and they were the most graceful, magestic creatures I have ever seen. I can still lay down and think about it and it feels like I am back in the middle of hundreds of hammerheads watching the largest fish in the sea swim by. Man, I am there now, what an awesome experience! |

Probably one of the dives I have was with my wife a greek girl I meet in London. We were off to brazil on a doctors without boarders excursion to help expectant mothers with problem deliveries. After spending 3 days helping the many many young mothers we got called over to help with a 400 lb female gorrilla that was having complications. Talk about communication problems. Healthy delivery. Anyway we were then off to piriapolis Uruguay to swim with sea lions. It was amazing |

Difficult one as have had so many differnt, fantastic dives but there are a few that stand out, all in Thailand: Watching 3 leopard sharks mating at Phi Phi islands. Diving right next to a whale shark at Richelieu Rock for 30 minutes. Watching a 4 metre manta circling around my wife and I in the Similan islands.

So far my favorites have been wreck dives in the St Lawrence Seaway. The Jodery is a self unloading freighter, just slightly shorter than the Edmund Fitgerald. it's lying on the side of the channel just off of the Coast Guard Station at Alexandria Bay NY. As the ship comes into sight at about 150' it is just HUGE!!!! It goes much deeper, but I need more training first :) Another favorite there is the A.E. Vickery. It can be done as a rec dive or a tec dive. the stern of the ship is actually hanging out over the edge of the deep channel. Next time I need to take my camera!! |

Probably my favorite dive at this point is the Yongala wreck in Townsville Australia. It's an isolated manmade reef so there is so much life! A must dive if you're in the area. Great idea for a thread. |

Hi
I agree with the comments about the Maldives & the Red Sea. but I must admit I was diving in Bohol in the Philippines recently & it was fantastic.
The condition of the coral was great. I just wish I'd had more time to dive there.
I'll be arriving in Jubail on July 4th, so I hope to get to meet some new dive buddies.
Professor Jacgarcia (Ihope that's correct - apologies if it's not) tell me more about Moalboal please.

me? if it is me, no prob on the spelling, it's 1 letter off hehehehe
what can i tell you about moalboal? hmmmm...
it's about 3hrs by land from cebu city (w/c is like a diet Manila) and is pretty much a sampling of the country's best diving
most everything from smallish fish to schools of jacks and barracudas to (if you're lucky) mantas, whale sharks, sharks, and such...
hope this helps

Thanks Jagg. would you be able to recommend a particularly good site in the Moalboal region.
Are there are any other diving areas I should think about visiting in the Philippines on my next visit.

For me, it's Exotic in Malapascua! The place is absolutely perfect! Friendly staffs and a great accommodation. Plus of course the beauty of their sea, white sand beach. |
